Our program today spotlights an exciting new community partnership for the Rotary Club of York – working with Family First Health and the United Way of York County to leverage our support and establish “Reach Out and Read” as a new collaborative initiative in York. This is a nationwide program, with a 21-year history, focused on the positive effects of reading during a child’s critical early learning period (ages 0 to 5). It combines reading development and physical well-being through a process that connects medical wellness checkups with a physician’s prescription for parent/child reading interactions. You will hear from two of our partners: Sara Bradley, Director of Education Initiatives at the United Way of York County, and Jenny Englerth, President/CEO of Family First Health. Joining Sara and Jenny is Linda Gort, a Reach Out and Read Champion at SouthEast Lancaster Health Services – a member of the Lancaster Reach Out and Read Coalition, to share the positive impact the program is having in our neighboring community. One book at a time and one family at a time, we will be “making a difference” by elevating our children’s intellectual growth and in turn providing a positive impact on our city’s education system.
