End Date/Time: Wednesday, June 27, 2018 1:30 PM
Recurring Event: One time event
Importance: Normal Priority
Description:
Disagreement now permeates American public life, with citizens telling pollsters that political conflict is becoming a significant source of stress in their personal lives. How do we restore a better atmosphere? How do we restore civility in our work and daily lives? Part of the answer is looking back to the lessons of history. Gettysburg is more than just a battlefield. . .it has been a place of healing and veteran reconciliation since July 4th, 1863. Our speaker will be Matthew C. Moen, PhD., president of the Gettysburg Foundation and 15-year Rotarian. Matt will speak on Gettysburg and its Place in American Democracy. Respectful leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln, whose Gettysburg Address spoke clearly of the unfinished work of democracy remind us to foster more civility--in business, politics and in our personal interactions. During his talk, Matt will illustrate the practical lessons we can all learn from Lincoln, as well as the sacrifice and selflessness of the townspeople of Gettysburg in the aftermath of searing destruction.
