Weekly Lunch Meeting - gotowebinar.com
The Program "100th Anniversary of the Women's Right to Vote" will be provided by Dr. Jane Sutton.
Jane S. Sutton is Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences Emeritus at Penn State whose academic career delved deep beneath the foundations of rhetoric and moved relentlessly through its intriguing, heartbreaking, and inspiring past. What she found led her to look backward and forward at the same time, always circling around the question of authority. Who can speak and when and where? Resting on the idea that rhetoric is a foundation stone of civil society and an essential part of the democratic process, her talk on the 100th anniversary of the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote, investigates the history of women and suffrage in the scaffolding of voice, political decision making, and leadership. Though an academic by trade, her metaphoric style brings her audience to a breathtaking boundary where the vagaries of authority are visible. The House of My Sojourn: Rhetoric, Women, and the Question of Authority (U of Alabama Press) won the Bonnie Ritter Book Award in 2011 from the Feminist/Women Studies in Communication, National Communication Association. Currently, she is writing a book “Women & the Presidency: Dialogue of New Era, 1870-2016.” She resides in Glen Rock with her husband, Jerry Caslow.
