Our club meeting next week will feature Cassandra Coleman, Executive Director for the America250PA initiative. Pennsylvania is THE birthplace of democracy! Almost 250 years ago, 13 colonies convened in Philadelphia to sign the Declaration of Independence — a document that conveys the ideals of equality, liberty, and government by consent of the governed. These ideals help us identify the cornerstone of our rights and responsibilities as Americans and Pennsylvanians.
The Pennsylvania Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial Act of 2018 established America250PA to plan, encourage, develop, and coordinate the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, Pennsylvania’s integral role in that event and the impact of its people on the nation’s past, present, and future.
America250PA envisions this historic initiative as an opportunity to engage ALL Pennsylvanians in ALL 67 counties to be certain that this commemoration is one that is most inclusive.

Everyone needs a hobby heading into retirement and our presenter "dug in" going back to college to earn a Bachelor degree in Archaeology and a Masters focused on Ancient Greece. Our speaker will be Joe Wagman, former Rotarian and Chairman of Wagman Construction. Joe has titled his talk "in search of Achillies". Starting with an Art History class in college in his early 20's, and a couple of dig participations during his college years, Joe developed and active interest in Archaeology. Anticipating retirement forty years later, he took classes on a part-time basis at Dickinson College and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology in 2016. In 2021 he completed a Master's program at the University of Pennsylvania, focused on the Mycenaean Civilization (ancient Greece).
Each summer in recent (non-Covid) years he has spent 2-3 weeks on digs in Greece. Joe will discuss the results of his most recent dig, that took place in June of 2022. The goal of that dig was to investigate the possibility that a first order Mycenean citadel, linked by Homer to Achilles, existed on the Akrolamia (hilltop) of Lamia, Greece. Come hear Joe's fascinating journey of transitions towards retirement and following your passions as time becomes more your own.

We will be traveling to South County Brewing Company. In 2011, South County Brewing Company began in a small pole building tucked away in Fawn Grove, PA. The company now has two locations including the newly opened flagship production/taproom facility in York Township. South County Brewing Company prides itself on the quality of their product, and the scaling of the beer to meet the demand. Kellee and Sam Terroso, co-owners, will co-host our meeting and tell us how they are different than most small startup breweries: they do not have the problem of trying to sell their beer, they quickly had the problem of not making enough beer! Additionally, they will talk about completing (and opening!) a complicated 28,000 square foot production/retail project on 13 fully wooded acres during the “Covid-challenged” times of late 2020 through their opening in April 2022.

In 2021, businesses in the United States added nearly 4 million jobs. At the same time, the United States has 3 million fewer workers today than we did in February 2020 before the pandemic. Everywhere we see businesses advertising for workers. How can businesses recruit employees, and how do you retain employees who may think that the grass is greener with a competitor? We know Walt Tilley from his work with our Youth Exchange program, but next week he is going to come in his role as a partner at his law firm, Stock and Leader, to share a fresh approach on Responding to America’s Labor Shortage. Walt brings a heart-warming story, his unique brand of humor, and an innovative business strategy to his timely and important message.
