This week is our annual Veteran’s Day meeting. Author Sandra Lee Kearse-Stockton is a York native. A veteran with 30 years to her credit, Sandra retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the U.S. Army. Her husband, Aaron, served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, and retired as a Technical Sergeant.
Her military journey was full of unpredictable situations, trials and tribulations but she endured. Her story is one of perseverance and success against the difficult backdrop of childhood abuse, teenage motherhood, and gun violence that took her grown son. Sandra promised herself that she would work until age 70 and then focus on "writing that book that she said she would write one day". Sandra published her first book in her trilogy, “480 Codorus Street, Surviving Unpredictability” at age 71, a year after she retired from her civilian job working with veterans.
She has been a mentor for countless people. With 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, she and her husband somehow found the time to foster over 100 children. Sandra and Aaron wrote a book about their experience, titled "There Is Always Room For One More."
In May 2023, she was the recipient of the Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award in York.

For more than 125 years the York County History Center has collected, cared for and shared our county's history through its museums, historic structures, material culture, exhibits, programs and services. Holding a collection of more than 500,000 artifacts (more than any county historical organization in our region), and coping with $20M in deferred maintenance on 10 buildings and exhibits that had not changed in decades, Rob Kinsley and Joan Mummert, along with board members and volunteers, sought solutions to dramatically revamp the organization, fulfilling its legal obligation to hold collections and serve the public. Rob and Joan will briefly review that process and share the exciting state-of-the-art York County History Center set to open in June 2024. |
