We will hear from Tim Pasch of Freedom Square Development. Tim has been working in real estate since his time as an undergrad at Penn State in the mid- 80’s. He established Timothy F. Pasch Inc. in 1990 and has a proven track record of successful projects and development in our communities ever since. Tim will update us on his most recent and largest project, Freedom Square Community, a master planned community with a town-center experience that includes both residential and commercial development programs featuring extensive outdoor amenities.

We will hear from Dr. Eric Darr, President of Harrisburg University of Science and Technology. During his presentation, he will delve into the University’s significant growth and expansion in advanced agriculture. He will provide updates on the exciting developments, including a new urban greenhouse in downtown York and strategic partnerships with the York Fairgrounds. These initiatives, in collaboration with leading Dutch agriculture technology firms, are poised to catapult York and Pennsylvania to the forefront of agricultural technology.

The recent retirement of Shank's Mare's owners Liz and Steve Winand, provided an opportunity for LSRA to continue outdoor education programming that has introduced over 30,000 area students to the Susquehanna River.

We will  hear from Katie Caples from ECHO, or Every Child Has Opportunities, a new early childhood education initiative in response to the early childhood education crisis we face as a community. Led by Community Connections for Children and York County Economic Alliance, ECHO's goal is to increase the number of children, particularly low-income children, served in high-quality early childhood education programs in York County. Katie Caples, ECHO Director, will share how ECHO is strengthening the early childhood education ecosystem in York County, along with an invitation to join the conversation.

We will welcome Rotary Foundation Trustee, Marty Helman, to our club meeting. Marty joined the Boothbay Harbor, Maine Rotary Club in 2003, and in 2012-13 she served as Governor of District 7780. She served as president of the Otto and Fran Walter Foundation, a nonprofit that has helped build schools in developing nations, provided scholarships for at-risk youth, and partnered with The Rotary Foundation to fund the new Rotary Peace Center that will be located at Bahçeşehir University in Istanbul. Marty is an Arch Klumph Society member, and she chooses to support Rotary as a member of the Paul Harris Society and PolioPlus Society. She will speak to us on the Rotary Peace Centers, The Rotary Foundation, and growth topics.

WEEKLY MEETING - Miller Plant Farm

We will hear from David Miller, a fourth generation farmer and the president of Miller Plant Farm, Inc. The original 29 acres was purchased on April 1, 1912 by his great grandfather, Howard Miller. Today Miller Plant Farm owns about 240 acres and has preserved 140 acres with the Farm and Natural Lands Trust of York County in 2023. Miller Plant Farm is believed to be the last working farm in Spring Garden Township. His son Dustyn and his nephew Steve, represent the 5th generation. Dave will tell us about Miller Plant Farm’s diversified business with a garden center,  growing vegetable transplants for commercial vegetable growers, and their 50 acre vegetable farm, and 600 member CSA.

Join us as we celebrate York County’s and America’s birthdays and the anniversary of our nation’s first constitution! On August 19, 1749, the County of York was created as the fifth county of Pennsylvania. On July 4, 1776, the Second Continental Congress signed and adopted the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia and on November 15, 1777, the Second Continental Congress met at the Courthouse in the square of York and adopted the Articles of Confederation, our nation’s first constitution, which formally ratified that the original thirteen colonies were now “United States of America.” Rotarians, President Commissioner Julie Wheeler and Register of Wills Past President Bryan Tate, will share how York County will be celebrating for four years, kicking off with York County's birthday in August!

Opportunity College designs and builds career-connected postsecondary pathways to accelerate youth from lower-income households into careers in tech that lead to upward mobility.  Drawing from his extensive background in education and his personal journey as a first-generation college student from the South Bronx, Dr. Butler will share insights on how high-quality work-based learning experiences can transform both individual lives and entire communities. He will discuss the potential for a community-wide initiative that brings together businesses, schools, and civic organizations to create meaningful opportunities for young people in York. This talk promises to offer practical strategies for energizing York’s future workforce and fostering a more vibrant local economy for all.

WEEKLY MEETING - Children's Aid Society

We will hear from Rotarian Eric Chase, President and CEO of Children’s Aid Society (CAS), a not-for-profit organization empowering Adams, Franklin and York county children and families to build stronger healthier lives since 1913. They envision a community where all children are safe and feel loved. CAS programs include one of three Crisis Nurseries in the country, the Lehman Center, the Cornerstone Youth Home for grade school age children whose families are experiencing homelessness, and much more. The presentation will focus on the success and growth of CAS in the past eight years and the new Werner Early Learning Childcare Center, a $6 million construction project to expand the Lehman Crisis Nursery in the Salem Square neighborhood in York City, including a 3rd shift childcare pilot program.

We will hear from York City Fire Department Chief William Sleeger. He was born and raised in York City and is a 32-year veteran with the York City Fire Department. He is also a third-generation city firefighter. Chief Sleeger has received many awards and commendations for heroism during his career, and is a life member with the Laurel Fire Company and a US Navy veteran. He will speak about the 911 remembrance and City Fire Department plans for the upcoming National Fire Prevention month in October.

We will hear from Dr. Michele Devlin, Professor of Environmental Security at the US Army War College in Carlisle. She is a Doctor of Public Health, Registered Nurse, and Emergency Medical Technician. Her specialty areas include disaster relief and emergency response, climate migration, and extreme remote regions such as the Arctic and Antarctica. Dr. Devlin has been providing consulting and training to the military, law enforcement, medical workers, and other first responders for over three decades. Her presentation will focus on the rapidly increasing challenge of human climate migration and environmental displacement.

Norina Bentzel will share her experience as Principal of North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary School in February 2001, when a man wielding a machete entered the school and randomly attacked twenty-three kindergarten children, two teachers and herself. She will speak to our club about that day, and about crisis, trauma, healing, and forgiveness as detailed in her new book, Glorious Sadness.

We will welcome Janelle Stelson, the Democratic candidate for US Congress in PA's 10th District, including Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland and York counties. An Emmy Award-winning journalist, she was previously the co-anchor of the WGAL News 8 weeknight news. Stelson's strong commitment to community includes service on the board of the Humane League and working closely with the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, Janelle grew up in the Seattle area and graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a degree in Politics and Government. Stelson will share with Rotary her decision to leave her role telling our stories to be our voice in Washington and be the leader she believes we need.

We will welcome Congressman Scott Perry, the incumbent Republican candidate for PA's 10th District, including Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland and York counties. He retired from the U.S. Army at the rank of Brigadier General in 2019, after nearly 40 years in uniform. He is a member and former Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus; served three terms in the Pennsylvania General Assembly; has a bachelor’s degree from Penn State in Business Management; and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He will speak to our club about his record and why he believes he is the best person to represent the 10th District in Congress.

We will celebrate Veteran’s Day with our parade of veterans at our meeting on November 13th. Our speaker will be Major General Wesley Craig, Retired Adjutant General of Pennsylvania. In this role, he commanded the PA National Guard and was responsible for the Veterans Affairs of PA. He is appearing as a representative of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the US Department of Defense. ESGR works with employers to ensure they support and value the military service of their employees. He will discuss the current operations of the PA Guard and how ESGR supports both the Warfighter and their employers.

WEEKLY MEETING - WellSpan

Weekly Club Meeting to be held at CCY and on Zoom.
 
We will hear from Rotarian Victoria Diamond, President of WellSpan York Hospital. Vicky has been instrumental in the planning and development of WellSpan York Hospital’s new $427 million expansion. The WellSpan York Hospital Surgical and Critical Care Tower will create over 500 new jobs in the York community and will hold over 640 beds for new and existing patients. This presentation will provide more detail on the project, including the timeline and additional insightful details.
