Katie will take us behind the scenes to provide a look at Wawa’s 200-year history in American business and show us how Wawa’s unique culture of caring has helped the family and associate-owned company take flight and expand through the years. Katie will also provide insights into Wawa’s community involvement and provide a birds-eye view of Wawa’s expansion in Central PA. |

We will hear from Dr. Donnell Butler, Founder and President of Opportunity College. Opportunity College designs and builds career-connected postsecondary pathways to accelerate youth from lower-income households into careers in tech that lead to upward mobility. Drawing from his extensive background in education and his personal journey as a first-generation college student from the South Bronx, Dr. Butler will share insights on how high-quality work-based learning experiences can transform both individual lives and entire communities. He will discuss the potential for a community-wide initiative that brings together businesses, schools, and civic organizations to create meaningful opportunities for young people in York. This talk promises to offer practical strategies for energizing York’s future workforce and fostering a more vibrant local economy for all.

Weekly Club Meeting to be held at CCY and on Zoom.
We will hear from Rotarian Eric Chase, President and CEO of Children’s Aid Society (CAS), a not-for-profit organization empowering Adams, Franklin and York county children and families to build stronger healthier lives since 1913. They envision a community where all children are safe and feel loved. CAS programs include one of three Crisis Nurseries in the country, the Lehman Center, the Cornerstone Youth Home for grade school age children whose families are experiencing homelessness, and much more. The presentation will focus on the success and growth of CAS in the past eight years and the new Werner Early Learning Childcare Center, a $6 million construction project to expand the Lehman Crisis Nursery in the Salem Square neighborhood in York City, including a 3rd shift childcare pilot program.

We will hear from York City Fire Department Chief William Sleeger. He was born and raised in York City and is a 32-year veteran with the York City Fire Department. He is also a third-generation city firefighter. Chief Sleeger has received many awards and commendations for heroism during his career, and is a life member with the Laurel Fire Company and a US Navy veteran. He will speak about the 911 remembrance and City Fire Department plans for the upcoming National Fire Prevention month in October.

We will hear from Dr. Michele Devlin, Professor of Environmental Security at the US Army War College in Carlisle. She is a Doctor of Public Health, Registered Nurse, and Emergency Medical Technician. Her specialty areas include disaster relief and emergency response, climate migration, and extreme remote regions such as the Arctic and Antarctica. Dr. Devlin has been providing consulting and training to the military, law enforcement, medical workers, and other first responders for over three decades. Her presentation will focus on the rapidly increasing challenge of human climate migration and environmental displacement. |

Norina Bentzel will share her experience as Principal of North Hopewell-Winterstown Elementary School in February 2001, when a man wielding a machete entered the school and randomly attacked twenty-three kindergarten children, two teachers and herself. She will speak to our club about that day, and about crisis, trauma, healing, and forgiveness as detailed in her new book, Glorious Sadness.

We will welcome Janelle Stelson, the Democratic candidate for US Congress in PA's 10th District, including Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland and York counties. An Emmy Award-winning journalist, she was previously the co-anchor of the WGAL News 8 weeknight news. Stelson's strong commitment to community includes service on the board of the Humane League and working closely with the American Cancer Society and the American Red Cross. Born in Fairbanks, Alaska, Janelle grew up in the Seattle area and graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a degree in Politics and Government. Stelson will share with Rotary her decision to leave her role telling our stories to be our voice in Washington and be the leader she believes we need.

We will welcome Congressman Scott Perry, the incumbent Republican candidate for PA's 10th District, including Dauphin County and parts of Cumberland and York counties. He retired from the U.S. Army at the rank of Brigadier General in 2019, after nearly 40 years in uniform. He is a member and former Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus; served three terms in the Pennsylvania General Assembly; has a bachelor’s degree from Penn State in Business Management; and a master’s degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. He will speak to our club about his record and why he believes he is the best person to represent the 10th District in Congress. |

We will celebrate Veteran’s Day with our parade of veterans at our meeting on November 13th. Our speaker will be Major General Wesley Craig, Retired Adjutant General of Pennsylvania. In this role, he commanded the PA National Guard and was responsible for the Veterans Affairs of PA. He is appearing as a representative of Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the US Department of Defense. ESGR works with employers to ensure they support and value the military service of their employees. He will discuss the current operations of the PA Guard and how ESGR supports both the Warfighter and their employers.

We will hear from Rotarian Victoria Diamond, President of WellSpan York Hospital. Vicky has been instrumental in the planning and development of WellSpan York Hospital’s new $427 million expansion. The WellSpan York Hospital Surgical and Critical Care Tower will create over 500 new jobs in the York community and will hold over 640 beds for new and existing patients. This presentation will provide more detail on the project, including the timeline and additional insightful details.

Natalee will share how the YCCF has been renewing those efforts through even stronger partnerships in 2024 with new leadership and a newer team. She will also review some of the YCCF's priorities and grant opportunities that will ensure community partnerships grow even stronger and strategic for a York County that gets better every year and with every generation. |

We will welcome John E. Jones, III, the 30th President at Dickinson College and a former United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Jones has presided over a number of high-profile cases. In 2003, Jones struck down portions of Shippensburg University’s speech code on the basis that it violated the First Amendment’s free speech guarantee. In 2005, Jones presided over the landmark case of Kitzmiller v. Dover School District, which held that it was unconstitutional to teach intelligent design within a public school science curriculum. In 2014, Jones resolved the matter of Whitewood v. Wolf by striking down as unconstitutional Pennsylvania’s ban on same-sex marriage. He will speak to our club on "The challenges and opportunities for colleges to pursue truth and free speech in an age of division."

This foundation provides music education to every student in need, while developing leadership and self-esteem. It builds community by unifying diverse groups and inspires and gives hope to our youth. The York Academy Regional Charter School is an International Baccalaureate World School with an unrelenting focus on academic excellence. Their programs challenge students in diverse learning environments and open doors for growth and opportunity. Students from this school will present vocal holiday favorites as we celebrate the season.
