Our speaker today will be Stephen H. Smith, who will present historical background related to the “Trees for the Trail” Rotary project. Before Interstate-83, the prominent north-south road in York County was the Susquehanna Trail. A very brief history of the Trail will lead into what is known about the planting of 400 Sycamore Trees along the Susquehanna Trail, extending from Jacobus southward to the Maryland Line. That 1920s tree-planting project, by The War Mothers Club, was done as a living memorial to York County’s World War I Veterans. Stephen earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University. He is a retired manager of design engineering at York International Corporation, now Johnson Controls. The project is being coordinated by Rotarian Shelly Riedel, who will explain the various opportunities for members to support this Rotary project.
