Bitcoin has been around since 2008, but its price, size in the market, and transaction volume have exploded in just the last few years. Interest has grown rapidly since 2019, as several major public companies lent it credibility by allowing for payment in Bitcoin, as well as holding it as an investment on their balance sheets.
Increasingly, investors and their advisors are asking whether Bitcoin should be held in portfolios, but first we must demystify cryptocurrencies and better understand why the blockchain has been called one of the most disruptive innovations since the advent of the Internet.
