FEEDING OUR NEIGHBORS: PEOPLE OF ACTION RESPONDING IN TIMES OF CRISIS
One of the focus areas for our club in meeting our mission is to RESPOND IN TIMES OF CRISIS. The loss of SNAP benefits as a result of the government shutdown is a crisis affecting the York community. Food insecurity can’t wait, and we cannot ignore this issue for many of our neighbors. The York Rotary Foundation (YRF) Board of Directors has voted to address this urgent need with a donation of$25,000 to the Nourish Now: Food Relief Fund and $10,000 to the York County Food Bank.
The York County Community Foundation (YCCF) has launched the Nourish Now: Food Relief Fund to provide direct help to our neighbors who are suddenly struggling to afford groceries. YCCF has partnered with the United Way of York County (UWYC) to provide immediate assistance to local families facing food insecurity. This program will provide eligible families with a $100 grocery credit to purchase essential food items while SNAP benefits are suspended. These one-time credits are intended to bridge the gap while federal food assistance is unavailable. The Nourish Now Fund and Emergency Food Relief Program offer an “upstream” approach by reaching individuals directly.
Food pantries are also facing funding shortages during the shutdown, limiting their capacity to meet the increased demand. The York County Food Bank has already seen a significant rise in demand and anticipates an additional surge. To respond, they are assembling emergency crisis boxes that can be quickly and efficiently distributed through their network of 100+ charitable food partners, at drive-thru distributions, and via home delivery for those who are homebound.
How can you help? Rotarians are invited to add to the YRF donations to these programs with a personal donation. Your donations will help allow resources to move quickly to York Countians who suddenly find themselves without the support they need. Every dollar donated helps a York County neighbor put food on the table.
To make a donation, please visit our website's Charitable Donations page to donate by credit card. Choose OTHER under the “Please Select Your Designation” and enter FOOD in the comments section. You may also mail in a check or bring a check to next week’s meeting.
With your help, we can reach thousands of local families facing food insecurity right now. Thank you for demonstrating that we are People of Action!
